VENTURA : City OKs Site for Dumping Dredged Silt From Harbor
The Ventura Planning Commission approved a permit Tuesday allowing the city to dump silt and sand on a vacant lot near the Ventura Marina.
Dredging, scheduled to begin in late fall, will remove silt that accumulated after recent storms and will dump it on 20 acres of city land near the southeast corner of Harbor Boulevard and Olivas Park Drive.
The dredging will occur within the harbor’s channels and outside city jurisdiction, so Tuesday’s decision addressed only where the silt and sand will be deposited.
Six-foot-high dikes will be used to hold the dredged materials during the three to six months it is expected to take for them to dry out.
Once the materials have dried, they may be transported elsewhere for use as fill dirt or covering for landfills.
Work is expected to be done 24 hours a day for 50 days. A total of 125,000 cubic yards of silt and sand is expected to be removed.
