Ton of Cocaine Seized in Raid, 5 Arrested

A ton to a ton and a half of cocaine with an estimated street value of $300 million to $400 million was seized Wednesday in the Whittier area at a tract house that had been converted into a drug warehouse, authorities said.

Deputy Police Chief William Booth said officers arrested five suspects at the house after an investigation of several weeks by LAPD narcotics detectives and FBI and U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service agents. The identities of the suspects--described as nationals of Mexico, Bolivia and Colombia--were not immediately disclosed.

Police said Wednesday’s seizure was the second biggest since the record 19.8-ton haul discovered in a Sylmar warehouse in September, 1989.
