MOORPARK : City Approves Plans for Old Town Hotel

City officials have approved plans for Moorpark’s first downtown hotel.

The plan has drawn support from merchants who believe that the $9-million project will improve business in the city’s historic district.

The 135-room Country Inn Hotel, surrounded by businesses in the Old Town area, would be the ninth hotel built by developer Martin V. (Bud) Smith in Ventura County, including the Financial Plaza Hilton in Oxnard and the Ramada Inn in Camarillo.

The Moorpark hotel, to be built on Spring Street near Flinn Avenue, will be a combination of Victorian and Tudor architectural styles. The developer is trying to attract a restaurant that will stay open late at night to occupy adjacent property, officials said.

The council approved the bulk of the project Wednesday night, although members decided that plans for storm-drain construction need to be reworked. The developer hopes to begin construction within 18 months.

Merchants believe that the hotel and restaurant will bring additional jobs to the community and attract tourists to downtown stores, said Carol Hunt, executive director of the Moorpark Chamber of Commerce.
