O.C. Surfers Among Newport Beach Entries

Chris Cullen and Troy Eckert, both of Newport Beach, are among 150 amateur surfers competing this weekend at the Quiksilver Gen X Challenge at 54th Street beach in Newport Beach.

Competition in four boys’ age groups, as well as a longboard and women’s division, begins at 7 a.m. Saturday. The finals begin at 7 a.m. Sunday.

The amateur finalists also will pair with several world tour professionals for a two-man team event starting at 11 a.m. Sunday. Among the pros expected to compete are Richie Collins of Newport Beach, Dino Andino of San Clemente, Jeff Booth of Laguna Beach and Kelly Slater of Cocoa Beach, Fla.
