Sales Tax Proposal
Gov. Pete Wilson’s sales tax hike proposal does not help Californians’ federal income tax bills. Since 1986, only state income tax and property tax are deductible on a taxpayer’s federal tax return. If California shifted its tax policy to recognize federal tax law, we could raise more money for California without increasing the overall tax paid by our citizens. However, the governor wants to raise fees and excise and sales taxes, which are not deductible. This is irresponsible. If California replaced its sales tax, excise taxes and fees with property taxes and income taxes, we would pay less federal income tax.
