VENTURA : Rally to Promote Bicycling to Work

Share

In an attempt to get more county employees to ride bicycles to work, a rally will be held at noon Tuesday in the courtyard of the County Government Center.

“It’s our own independent thing to promote biking,” said Jim Pickens, the county transportation coordinator. “So many of our employees live close by, and biking is a reasonable alternative.”

The county provides bike lockers and shower facilities for those who bike to work. Pickens estimated that approximately 100 to 120 employees are involved in the program.

The noon event will feature free pizza and beverages for those interested in biking. There will also be a drawing for a new commuter bike with helmet and riding gloves.

Information will be available on bike safety and equipment, Pickens said.

The event is sponsored by the county’s Employee Transportation Program, whose function is to bring county agencies and departments into compliance with a county air pollution regulation that requires a 20% reduction in the number of employees driving solo to work.
