World IN BRIEF : YUGOSLAVIA : U.S. Suspends Aid Over Human Rights
The United States suspended economic assistance to Yugoslavia because of what the State Department termed human rights violations. The United States said it will also oppose any attempt by the Balkan nation to obtain loans or credits from international lending institutions. “Yugoslavia’s problems . . . lie in the conduct of the Serbia republic leadership, which is exercising severe repression in the Kosovo province (and) has not conducted fully free and fair elections,” State Department spokeswoman Margaret Tutwiler said.
