$13.9 Million Approved for Freeway Projects
The California Transportation Commission on Thursday authorized $7.5 million for building the Norwalk portion of the Century Freeway, and approved $6.4 million for projects to improve traffic flow on Los Angeles freeways.
The largest chunk of the money for traffic flow improvements is $5.27 million for automated traffic surveillance devices along the Santa Monica Freeway. The high-tech projects are part of the Caltrans “Smart Corridor” experiment, which uses state-of-the-art technology to manage Los Angeles’ busiest freeway. The improvements include extensive upgrades of the system’s communication system and its extensive network of ramp meters and electronic pavement sensors.
The $7.5 million for Century Freeway construction includes $1.06 million to build freeway sound walls. The commission voted to pay for completion of the eastern end of the 17.3-mile freeway, which stretches from Norwalk to Los Angeles International Airport.
