Cloudy Weather on Tap for Holiday Weekend

May and June are the cloudiest months of the year, and this Memorial Day weekend will be no exception, according to the National Weather Service in San Diego.

The weather is following a typical pattern of morning cloudiness, clearing and sunny in the afternoon, meteorologist Wilbur Shigehara said.

The cloudiness increases this time of year as the desert warms up, Shigehara said.

As the desert gets hot, the barometer begins to drop, creating low pressure, he said. The low pressure tends to pull the coastal clouds inland, he said.

Despite the morning clouds, “it will be an enjoyable weekend for all outdoor activities--not too hot and not too cold,” Shigehara said.

The warmest and sunniest day of the holiday weekend will be today, with temperatures cooling as much as two degrees each day through Monday, he said.

At the beaches, the forecast calls for temperatures to range from 62 to 67 through Memorial Day. Ocean conditions are quiet, with the surf at 2 to 3 feet and an ocean temperature of 62 degrees.

Coastal temperatures are expected to range from 68 to 76 today, 67 to 75 over the weekend. Memorial Day will be about 2 degrees cooler, Shigehara said. Temperatures at night are expected to range from 53 to 58.

In the inland areas, temperatures will rise to 77 to 83 and drop down to 75 to 80 over the weekend and 73 to 78 on Monday, Shigehara said. Nighttime lows will dip to 48 to 55.

Mountain areas will have temperatures of 73 to 80 today, decreasing to 70 to 76 by Monday, Shigehara said. Nighttime lows will range from 38 to 48.

In the deserts, the mercury will soar to 100 to 106 today and Saturday, dipping slightly to 96 to 102 on Sunday and Monday, Shigehara said. Nights will remain warm, from 58 to 68 degrees.
