USC senior Byron Black advanced to a third-round matchup against UCLA’s Jason Netter with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 victory over Craig Wildey of Kansas at the NCAA men’s tennis championships Thursday at Athens, Ga.
Netter, the tournament’s runner-up last year, ousted Martin Persson of Auburn, 6-1, 6-3. Fritz Bissell, the other Bruin left in the singles draw, defeated Arizona’s Doug Livingston, 6-7 (14-12), 6-3, 6-0.
“The first set was a little hard because he has a different style,” Black said of Wildey. “He hits a lot of balls hard.”
Also advancing was USC’s Donny Isaak, 7-5, 6-1, over Luis Ruette of Texas Christian, and Pepperdine’s Alejo Mancisidor, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4), over Luciano D’Andrea of Virginia Commonwealth.
USC, the team champion, UCLA, Stanford and host Georgia each advanced two players into the final 16.
However, Georgia’s Al Parker, who was seeded second, was upset, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2, by Harvard’s Albert Chang.
