NATION IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Strict Campaign Fund Law Signed
Gov. Lawton Chiles signed legislation that imposes the nation’s toughest limits on campaign contributions and creates a public fund for statewide races. The law sets a new $500 contribution limit. It was hailed by national advocates of campaign finance reform but drew criticism from political consultants who claimed it would do little to change the influence of cash. Chiles, a Democrat who served three terms in the U.S. Senate, had styled his 1990 campaign for governor as a crusade against the influence of big-money interests by limiting contributions to his race to $100.
