Pasadena : Theater Revamping Studied

A 66-year-old movie theater on Washington Boulevard, closed for the past six months, could become the city’s next community cultural center.

The idea will be studied by consultant Gina Zamporelli, who received a $5,000 grant from Kaiser Permanente to examine the feasibility of a nonprofit organization or a city cultural group revamping the theater. The money was part of Kaiser Permanente’s community contribution program.

The two-story theater building is near Lake Avenue, across the street from Northlake Square shopping center. It contains apartments above small shops next to the closed movie house. Owner Norm Fuhrman sought to convert the theater into more shops but was persuaded by City Councilman Rick Cole to delay his plans while the study is prepared.
