World IN BRIEF : SOUTH AFRICA : Little Gained in Peace Summit, ANC Says
South Africa’s African National Congress dismissed a government-sponsored weekend peace summit, which it refused to attend, as lacking in substance. The group said it is still studying conference decisions, which included setting up two committees to work for an all-party initiative to end township violence. The ANC said it would support a more broadly based conference in the future. Meantime, seven people were shot, burned or stabbed to death in political clashes in black townships, raising the weekend death toll to at least 20, police said.
