* Gulf in the War: Cartoonist Garry Trudeau urged Yale University graduates to ask impertinent questions about the Persian Gulf War. The creator of the “Doonesbury” comic strip said: “Was it the same war for you as it was for the Army engineers who . . . bulldozed 100,000 dead conscripts into the pits left by collapsed bunkers? This lingering perception of war (with) highly trained volunteers who go in, ‘get the job done’ and fly out again, is what scares some of your elders.”

* State of Humor: Comedian Mark Russell has learned not to make jokes in Indiana about Indiana native Dan Quayle. “People just level a kind of malevolent Hoosier look at you,” Russell said in Indianapolis. “You won’t hear me say anything about Vice President Dan Quayle. Not around here, anyway.”

* Aid the Queen: Defenders of the crown are in a snit over the Washington Post story that described Queen Elizabeth II as “this fusty cartoon, this upholstered relic in white gloves, this . . . defender of an ill-kept faith.” “No wonder many Britons consider Americans boorish and ill-mannered,” huffed one letter to the paper. And a Briton sniffed that Americans are jealous because “it is impossible to emulate a royal family.”

* Moon Over Mar-a-Lago: Officials of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s Unification Church say Donald Trump has resorted to “Moonie-bashing.” An unnamed Trump associate reportedly had said the cash-strapped developer might sell Mar-a-Largo, his Palm Beach, Fla., mansion, to Moon’s followers unless Palm Beach officials give him permission to convert the property to a housing subdivision. Church leader James Baughman complained: “Someone is using these scary images that have been propagated about my religion for the past two decades to scare people into doing what they want.”
