President Bush has nominated Ann Veneman to serve as deputy agriculture secretary, which would make her the highest-ranking woman ever at the Agriculture Department, the White House announced.

If confirmed by the Senate, Veneman, 41, would succeed a fellow Californian, Jack Parnell, in the department’s No. 2 post. Little opposition is expected in the Senate.

Veneman has been a high-ranking official at the Agriculture Department since 1986. She has been a deputy undersecretary in charge of trade policy, trade negotiations and food aid since July, 1989.
