NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Phillies’ Greene Stops Expos on Three Hits, 12-0

Share

Tommy Greene didn’t make much of run at Johnny Vander Meer’s record of consecutive no-hitters, but he turned in another impressive performance at Philadelphia Tuesday night.

Greene, who pitched a no-hitter at Montreal last Thursday, gave up a hit to the leadoff hitter, then pitched a three-hitter to lead the Phillies to a 12-0 rout of the Expos.

Delino Shields led off with a single against the 24-year-old right-hander but was out stealing before Marquis Grissom doubled.

Thereafter Greene (4-0), who walked none and struck out nine, gave up only one hit. In the no-hitter he walked seven.

Rookie Darrin Fletcher, who caught the no-hitter, broke the game open with a three-run home run in the fifth inning. He also drove in a run with a single as the Expos routed Oil Can Boyd (2-6) for six runs in five innings.

In three starts this season, Greene has pitched 24 innings and has given up no runs. His earned-run average, mainly because of some poor relief appearances, is 2.09.

“That never entered my mind,” Greene said of Vander Meer’s record. “My only thought is to go out there and win. I thought I pitched much better tonight. I had command of my off-speed pitches and my breaking balls. That made a big difference.”

Ricky Jordan had three of the Phillies’ 12 hits.

“Tommy Greene and Ricky Jordan. That was the story of this game,” Expo Manager Buck Rodgers said. “He’s pitched two good games against us.”

San Francisco 6, Cincinnati 2--The stumbling Giants needed a lift and Trevor Wilson gave it to them at San Francisco.

Wilson, who had lost four in a row, gave up four hits in eight innings to get his first victory and give the Giants only their fifth victory in 17 games.

Willie McGee hit a home run for the Giants.

New York 9, Chicago 8--The Mets were so happy to get out of New York they have started a winning streak.

They had lost four of five at home, capped by a 14-4 loss to St. Louis Sunday, but they beat the Cubs Monday at Chicago to end the skid.

After wasting a five-run lead in this game, Dave Magadan’s double broke an 8-8 tie and Alejandro Pena and John Franco shut down the Cubs in the last two innings.

Pittsburgh 9, St. Louis 8--Barry Bonds drove in three runs and the Pirates held on in the ninth at St. Louis to win their fifth in a row.

The Cardinals, held to one hit by Doug Drabek Monday night, came back with 11 hits. A two-run pinch single by Gerald Perry in the ninth cut the Pirate lead to a run, but Bill Landrum managed to get the final out.

Ozzie Smith had three more hits and drove in three runs for the Cardinals. The veteran shortstop, hitting .438 in the last 17 games, has raised his average to .331.

But the second loss in a row at home to the Pirates dropped the Cardinals into third place in the East, 4 1/2 games behind the first-place Pirates.

Atlanta 8, San Diego 6--The rest of the West is beginning to take notice of the Braves.

David Justice broke out of a slump with a two-run single in the ninth inning at San Diego to bring the Braves from behind for their second victory in a row.

The Padres, trying to win for the third time in 12 home games, took a 6-5 lead into the ninth, but Craig Lefferts (0-2) lost his fourth save opportunity.

Ron Gant led off with a home run for the second game in a row and Sid Bream and Terry Pendleton also homered for the Braves.
