Marathon to Pay $4 Million: The oil company agreed to a $900,000 fine and more than $3 million in environmental improvements to settle charges that it illegally dumped explosive petroleum wastes into Indianapolis sewers, U.S. Atty. Deborah J. Daniels said. Daniels said the former Rock Island Refining Corp. plant used a pipeline to illegally dispose of the toxics. Marathon continued to use the pipeline after it took over the refinery in March, 1989.
