Auto Makers Form Research Partnership: Detroit’s Big Three auto makers formed a research partnership to explore advanced electronic systems that should cut costs, improve fuel efficiency and make cars easier to build and repair. General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Corp. set the initiative as they face sagging sales and increasingly stiff competition, particularly from Japan. By avoiding duplication of effort, the partnership is expected to save money and speed results, officials said.
