Senate Republican leader Bob Dole on Wednesday called for dismissal of the Iran-Contra independent counsel, saying history and not the courts should be the final judge of the Ronald Reagan Administration’s worst scandal.

Dole urged Atty. Gen. Dick Thornburgh to invoke a provision of the special prosecutor law to seek dismissal of Lawrence E. Walsh, who has been investigating the Iran-Contra affair since late 1986.

Dole made his request a day after the Supreme Court cleared the way for hearings on whether former White House aide Oliver L. North received a fair trial. The high court dealt a serious blow to Walsh when it rejected his request that it review an appeals court ruling that ordered the hearings.
