Thanks for the Romance

Share

You touch our hearts. Jerry Hulse’s article (“To Sur With Love,” May 12) about Big Sur started me romancing again. There is no reason to duplicate what you have already written so well. I just want to add a little note about (Helmuth) Deetjen and the Big Sur Inn.

For me, in the early ‘50s, this was a point of enchantment. Deetjen, himself, was in his prime. One of the proudest of his feats was to lift a dining chair by grabbing it with one hand on the top rung and then lifting it straight out without a grimace.

The aura of classical music helped to make a little piece of heaven.

Back of the buildings, up by the little stream there is, for me, a natural shrine, made by the shape of the trees. I always meditate there.

I love the Big Sur Inn. But my wife won’t let me stop anymore. We have to stay in Ventana now.
