Share

Since being acquired by the Angels from the New York Yankees in two separate deals last season, Dave Winfield and Luis Polonia have posted attention-grabbing numbers.

Polonia, acquired April 29, 1990 for Rich Monteleone and Claudell Washington, is hitting .337 in 154 games with 191 hits, two home runs and 51 runs batted in. Winfield, acquired May 11, 1990 for pitcher Mike Witt, has also played 154 games. He has hit .274 with 159 hits, 28 homers and 106 RBIs.

Monteleone is an occasional reliever, Washington wasn’t re-signed by the Yankees this season and Witt, who was 5-6 for New York last season, has yet to pitch this season because of arm problems.

Polonia’s five-hit game Saturday was the third of his career and second as an Angel. The first came May 13 at Cleveland. His RBI single in the seventh was his 12th hit in 24 at-bats with runners in scoring position and two out. . . . Winfield’s second-inning grand slam was the ninth of his career and gave him 1,550 RBIs, one short of Harry Heilmann’s 23rd-place total. Winfield leads the Angels with nine homers.

Center fielder Junior Felix left Saturday’s game after 2 1/2 innings because he aggravated his strained right calf muscle. . . . Toronto’s 16 hits Saturday was the most against the Angels since Seattle got 16 in a 7-2 victory Sept. 16. . . . Pitcher Scott Bailes withdrew his grievance and paid the $450 fine assessed against him by AL President Bobby Brown for hitting the Yankees’ Randy Velarde with a pitch May 14 at New York.
