KCET Fires 17 Employees in Cost-Cutting Move
KCET Channel 28 notified 17 employees Tuesday that their jobs were being eliminated because of the recession, Vice President Barbara Goen said.
The employee cutbacks were first discussed last November when it became clear that the Los Angeles public TV station would fall about $1.5 million short of its $47.8-million budget for the 1991 fiscal year that ends June 30.
“We froze salaries, we made department reductions, we froze travel and we delayed the layoffs as long as possible,” station President William H. Kobin said. “And as we looked ahead to next year, we felt there was no alternative.” Including Tuesday’s layoffs and 24 positions vacated through attrition, KCET’s staff has been reduced over the past several months from 304 to 263, Goen said.
