Five South Bay women will be honored Saturday as Torrance YMCA’s Women of the Year at a luncheon at 11 a.m. at the Torrance Marriott.

The women who will be lauded for their outstanding contributions to the community are: Lea Ann King of Rolling Hills Estates, Cecilia Laxton of Torrance, Jean Grunland McMillan of Manhattan Beach, Doreen Myhers of Hermosa Beach and Melinda Schoen of Rancho Palos Verdes.

King chairs the PV2000 Committee of the Community Assn. of the Peninsula, created CAP’s first Festive Feast Multicultural Dinner and has worked on behalf of women’s issues.

Laxton has supported such youth activities as scouting, sports, PTA, Torrance school and youth bands, El Camino College bands and Torrance Parks and Recreation summer musicals.

McMillan led the effort to establish a South Bay-based Wellness Community Program to serve cancer patients and their families and has been involved in a number of foreign-student programs and served in numerous volunteer capacities.

Myhers has been a driving force in support of the Richstone Family Center in Hawthorne for more than 10 years, has worked with the Torrance Superior Court’s Victim’s Witness Assistance Program and as a children’s advocate in Los Angeles Superior Court.

Schoen is president of the American Assn. of University Women, Palos Verdes Peninsula branch and is active with the Assistance League of San Pedro-Palos Verdes.

Keynote speaker for the event will be Superior Court Judge Madge Watai and Torrance Mayor Katy Geissert will serve as emcee. Entertainment will be provided by Moonlighting, featuring Kevin Peterson and Jon Mercant.

Manhattan Beach resident Ileen Garcia has received a recognition award from the Visiting Nurse Assn. of Los Angeles. She was recognized for her service to the nonprofit association, which provides health care services in the home.

Three Inglewood students have been honored by Inglewood Park Cemetery for their selection as top essayists in the district. They are: Gerald Perdue, a 12th-grade student at Hillcrest Continuation School; Krystal Greene, eighth grade, Inglewood Christian School, and Rughayyah Latief, sixth grade, Highland Avenue Elementary School. The essay theme was “Living the Dream, Making a Personal Commitment.”

Jo Ann Woodward, a registered nurse and certified nurse practitioner in Manhattan Beach, is the recipient of the Miriam Manisoff Award in recognition of her contributions to the advancement of the role of the obstetrics-gynecology nurse practitioner. The award was presented at the 15th annual Post Graduate Seminar for Nurse Practitioners in Family Planning, held in Philadelphia.

Ruth Springer of Palos Verdes Estates received her 50-year member pin at a recent meeting of El Redondo Chapter, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution. She has served the chapter in many capacities. Membership in the NSDAR is open to women whose ancestors fought in or supported the American Revolution.

Elizabeth Nash, superintendent of the Southern California Regional Occupational Center in Torrance has been appointed by the State Board of Education to the State Committee of Practitioners for Career-Vocational Education. The committee is made up of representatives from state organizations of school administrators, teachers, parents, members of local boards of education, and of institutions of higher education. The committee will assist in development of the state’s accountability system for vocational education.
