A dozen Long Beach homes were evacuated Friday after authorities discovered explosives inside a house being used as a methamphetamine laboratory, police said. Garden Grove police officers and agents with the state Department of Justice discovered the lab after serving a search warrant in the 1800 block of Vuelta Grande Street about 8:30 a.m.

They discovered 20 pounds of methamphetamines worth an estimated $1 million. They also discovered 22 sticks of M-1000 high-explosive military firecrackers, which are used to simulate combat conditions, Long Beach Lt. Kenneth Schack said.

Two brothers renting the home were arrested on suspicion of manufacturing drugs and possession of drugs for sale. Bail was set at $500,000 each for David Gerritsen, 24, and Thomas Gerritsen, 22.
