What a pity all those irate hacks attacking reviewers Robert Sherrill and Sidney Blumenthal (‘Nancy Reagan” and “President Reagan,” respectively) had not first had the benefit of reading Evan S. Connell’s review of Will Roscoe’s “The Zuni Man-Woman” (May 26).

This fascinating, offbeat portrait of a lost culture was a revealing example of how ancient civilizations often had a far broader understanding of the finer points of societal gentility than our own.

We’wah, a berdache of the Zuni tribe, proved that manly beings in skirts could not only conduct themselves in politics with tact and diplomacy but also gain the love and admiration of the people around them.
