Fund-Raising Tactic

I was a little less than shocked when I read about UCSD’s possible fund-raising tactic of accepting a large donation in exchange for the naming of the medical facility (“UCSD Considers Naming School to Woo Donation,” May 25). Receiving a donation along with a name is ideal.

Whether the professors at the medical school like the name or not is an irrelevant matter when the donation will give the school the immediate help it needs and provide dividends in the future. It seems Chancellor Richard C. Atkinson should show some backbone and make the decision to formally propose an offer to multimillionaire James L. Sorenson. The choice is very clear.
