Nation IN BRIEF : LOUISIANA : ‘Last Resort’ Shelter in Hurricanes Urged

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Gulf Coast communities should have in place “last resort” shelters for people who don’t depart in time to escape a powerful hurricane, National Hurricane Center director Bob Sheets said in Harahan, La. Sheets said he understood there was a reluctance to accept vertical evacuation--the moving of people into high-rise structures--but some sort of last resort refuge should be worked out. He said such a plan should not be advertised, however, because people might then delay evacuating until it was too late. He suggested that hurricane preparation and evacuation information be included in the yellow pages of telephone books.
