Whittier : Overnight Parking Ban on Uptown Streets Backed

Share

The Parking and Transportation Commission has recommended that the City Council prohibit overnight parking in Uptown Whittier, despite protests from residents who said they have no other place to park.

Pending council approval, the plan would prohibit parking between 2 and 5 a.m. For $12 a year per car, residents could purchase a permit for street parking. Their visitors could park for $3 a night. “The concept is being brought up because people are not using their garages for parking,” City Traffic Engineer Joe Dyer said. The prohibition also would help police identify vehicles that do not belong in the neighborhood, officials said.

Area residents said they have no place to park other than the street, and city researchers concluded that most garages in the area were built in the 1940s and are inadequate for modern vehicles.
