Academic Freedom Is Threatened

Share

I find it frightening that a college district would examine a class on witchcraft and religion after one complaint by a non-student.

According to your article, Barbara LaSala complained to her representative that all aspects of Christianity are being replaced by another form of spirituality at taxpayers’ expense. Aside from the fact that not all taxpayers are Christians, I find it ridiculous to believe that a student’s faith could be threatened by the content of a class.

If LaSala is trying to protect those whose faith is weak, she’d better eliminate world literature, philosophy, history and science.

I wish I could brush this off as a witch hunt, but when an assemblyman and the college district get into the act, I worry. Academic freedom is essential to me as a community college student. I would hate to have someone cancel the class on the Bible I’m taking next semester.
