Highest Girl Scouting Award Presented to 18

The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouting, was presented to 18 senior Scouts at a banquet in the Mesa Verde Country Club in Costa Mesa.

The honorees are Jennifer Alsop and Karin Daugherty, Yorba Linda; Rachel Baer, Jeanette Pettibone and D’Arcy Smith, Costa Mesa; Cary Bohmholdt, Laguna Hills; LeAnn Eitreim, Anaheim; Cherie Keller, Marisa Lally, Debbi Murphy and Christine Norbrothen, Mission Viejo; Shannon Koenig and Kristen Shepos, Garden Grove; Thai Phuong Nguyen, Tustin; Kathleen Phillips and Katie Thompson, Irvine; Andrea Stein, Cypress, and Jo Vance, Stanton.

The awards were earned through achievements in leadership, community service, career exploration, skills development and completion of self-designed service projects.

The awards were presented by Bernice Hird, president of the Girl Scout Council of Orange County. Keynote speaker at the banquet was Detective LaVonne Campbell of the Newport Beach Police Department.

Fitness coordinator Diane Henry of Westminster was named Cypress College’s “Outstanding Faculty Member” and received a plaque and $1,000 from the Cypress College Foundation. Henry oversees the college’s training lab and teaches a wide variety of courses.

Michael Dean, who oversees a staff of 50 at the Recovery Center at Healthcare Medical Center, a Tustin alcohol and drug rehabilitation program, has been named Alumni of the Year by the human services division at Saddleback Valley College.

The San Clemente resident, who directs the adolescent and adult treatment programs at Healthcare, is a certified alcohol and drug counselor.

Dean also is a lecturer on drug and alcohol abuse and is a member of groups including the Orange County Substance Abuse Prevention Network.

El Toro High School student Dan Worthington, who built and installed a recycling center for the State Park Service at Doheny State Beach as his community service project, was presented his Boy Scout Eagle Rank at a court of honor at Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church in Mission Viejo.

Natika J. Padilla of John Adams Elementary School in Santa Ana entered the name “The Amazon’s Edge” to win the Santa Ana Zoo’s name contest for a new, $800,000 exhibit. The exhibit will initiate a 10-phase, $10-million renovation.

Natika’s class will receive an all-expense-paid trip to the zoo, and her family will receive a one-year pass to the zoo.

There were 420 entries submitted for the contest, which was open to Santa Ana students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

A fingerprinting and safety awareness workshop for children was the community service project that Esperanza High School sophomore Brett Ryan Wishartdeveloped to earn his Boy Scout Eagle Award. He is a Yorba Linda resident.

Welding student Victor D. Garcete of Anaheim was named High School Student of the Year and Tricia Szczublewski of Anaheim, an advanced office technology student, was named Adult Student of the Year at the annual Celebration of Success ceremony by the North Orange County Regional Occupational Center.

Lucille Conser, owner of Bonnie’s Bouquet of Anaheim, which markets cookie bouquets as an alternative to traditional gift giving, was named 1991 Saleswoman of the Year by the 300-member Orange County Chapter of Women in Sales.

Mission Viejo resident Jennifer J. Bush, who holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing and is embarking on a medical writing career, was named recipient of the Rosalind Morris Memorial Scholarship from the Orange County Professional Chapter of Women in Communications. Bush, enrolled in the Cal State Fullerton journalism program, received a $250 award.
