Charger Owner Spanos to Aid Adams Fund

Share

Team owner Alex Spanos will donate $100 to the Adams Children Fund for every three-point basket made by the Charger of Bill Walton’s choice in a span of 60 seconds at halftime of tonight’s benefit basketball game for the five girls left without parents.

The 7 p.m. contest at Grossmont College, which includes a raffle with a grand prize of an all-expenses-paid trip to Denver for the Chargers’ Sept. 22 game with the Broncos, will pit the media against the players.

Spanos will not only contribute $100 for every three-pointer dropped in by a selected Charger, but will also kick in $100 for every long-range shot made by the media representative selected by Coach Dan Henning.

If the media hotshot outscores the Charger, Spanos will donate an additional $500 to the fund.

The girls’ parents died in a shooting in April and proceeds from the evening will be placed in a Bank of America fund for the five girls, age 4-18.

The WingTips, a 50s and 60s band, have donated their musical effort to the event and quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver and Burt Grossman will contribute $10 each for every point scored by the Chargers. The low scorer between Grossman and Tolliver will also add another $500 to the cause.

Tickets may be purchased at the door; $5 for adults and $2.50 for children.

The MSL Players’ Assn. agreed to extend today’s deadline for clubs to exercise rights of first refusal until June 24, according to Ron Newman, Sockers coach.

John Kerr, head of the union, did not return a phone call.

The extension allows more time to several parties trying to keep or bring Major Soccer League teams to four cities, including:

--Newman, who is talking to several potential buyers of the Sockers.

--Gordon Jago, general manager of the defunct Dallas Sidekicks, who is trying to maneuver Dallas back into the league.

--Seymour Knox, owner of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, who is still consideringan MSL expansion team for his city.
