The U.S. national team played world club champion AC Milan of Italy to a 1-1 tie before 41,572, a Chicago-record crowd for soccer.
Hugo Perez put the United States ahead in the 53rd minute when Eric Wynalda made a brilliant pass from the right flank that found Perez alone in the penalty area. Marco Van Basten scored 10 minutes later for Milan, redirecting a header by Frank Rijkaard from right in front of U.S. goaltender Tony Meola.
