United Seeking Chicago-Britain Route: United Airlines asked the U.S. Transportation Department for permission to fly daily nonstop service between Chicago and Stansted Airport outside London. Stansted, opened in March, is 26 miles northeast of London. The request promised to heat up the fiercely competitive war between United and American Airlines for lucrative transatlantic air routes. An American spokesman said the company will oppose United’s request.
