Newspapers of the Future

Share

I gathered up The Times for Saturday and Sunday (I get behind in my reading at times) and settled down on the patio for sunshine and reading. Imagine my chagrin upon working my way through “Inventing the ‘Paper’ of the Future” (by David Shaw, Column One, June 2) to realize that my days of enjoying the printed news are numbered as we face the future with “knowbot” (knowledge robot). Now, the daily newspapers are going into the multimedia world of dishing up the news via a television-fax machine-videocassette recorder-high-speed printer, ad nauseam. All this without getting ink on our hands.

Enough with being entertained. Television news already has been reduced to entertainment. I like reading the news. I like ink on my hands. I like holding the newspaper in my hands, reading each section as I wish.

Well, there is one major consolation. “Knowbot” isn’t here yet. I can get ink on my hands for a few more cherished years.
