A man described as one of the last remaining patriarchs in New Jersey’s most dominant crime family was found guilty Wednesday of murder, extortion, racketeering and running a gambling empire.

Louis Gatto, 74, was convicted following a three-month trial.

Assistant U.S. Atty. James Patton said Gatto called the shots for a Bergen County-based faction of the powerful Genovese crime family, which for decades has been recognized as New Jersey’s most powerful mob group.

With help from his son-in-law, Alan Grecco, who was also convicted Wednesday, the frail patriarch held a grip on a lucrative gambling and numbers ring in New York and northern New Jersey that relied on intimidation and murder, prosecutors said.

U.S. District Judge Harold Ackerman revoked bail for both men and ordered them jailed pending sentencing Sept. 27. Each faces more than 70 years in prison and $2 million in fines.
