From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A scientist reported that a new AIDS vaccine now being tested on humans may give long-term protection against the deadly disease. Dr. Josef Manhalter of Swiss-based Immuno International AG said chimpanzees given the vaccine--called rgp160--resisted infection for more than 30 months from the HIV virus that causes AIDS. He discussed results of his research at the Seventh International AIDS Conference in Florence, Italy. He said clinical trials are under way on 60 human volunteers but that--even if it fulfills its early promise--a commercially available vaccine is still several years away.
