Roberts’ Star Power
Regarding “The Power of Julia,” by Elaine Dutka (June 9):
In writing about Julia Roberts, no one seems to have come up with the real reason for her quick success. This phenomenon, who just escapes being beautiful but also just misses being ugly, is the first female with a truly individual, recognizable face on the screen since the ‘50s gave us Marilyn Monroe, Shirley MacLaine, Audrey Hepburn, Judy Holliday and Grace Kelly.
The young female stars of today would hardly be missed if they were never seen again. I see pictures of Kim Basinger, Michelle Pfeiffer and other so-called stars, and I can’t tell one from the other. They will never be true, lasting stars; they’re too interchangeable, too commonplace, too girl next door.
Roberts could become another flash in the pan; she cannot survive poor pictures. But as one who appreciates her individuality, so rare today, I hope that does not happen.
