Kenny Knox and Brian Claar matched the course record with nine-under-par 62s to tie for the lead in Saturday’s rain- and darkness-suspended third round of the Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic.

They finished 54 holes at Kingsmill Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va., at 15-under 198.

Also at that figure was Mike Hulbert, who was on the 16th hole when play was suspended for the day at 8:07 EDT. Dan Pohl was 15 under through 14 holes.

Fourteen of the 80 golfers were unable to finish before dark, including second-round co-leaders Mike Donald and Ian Baker-Finch. They were at 14 under through 13 holes.

Those also on the course included Lanny Wadkins, Bobby Wadkins, Bob Gilder and Brad Fabel, all at 12 under through 14 holes.

Knox and Claar became the second and third golfers to shoot 62s this week. Baker-Finch had one Thursday to tie the mark set last year by Mike Sullivan.

Knox and Claar each put together a bogey-free, nine-birdie round that was interrupted by rain for 3 hours 50 minutes.

Claar was making the turn when the rain came and the golfers were forced off the course.

“It was perfect,” he said. “It was just like a little lunch break.”

Nick Faldo overcame heavy winds and shot a two-under-par 70 to turn a three-stroke deficit into a three-stroke lead after three rounds of the Irish Open at Killarney.

U.S. Open champion Payne Stewart, co-leader going into the round, shot a 77 and fell four shots behind Faldo’s 213. Stewart lost five shots over the closing six holes for an 42 on the back nine.

“That’s as bad as I’ve seen for a long time,” Faldo said of the weather conditions.

Mike Hill’s round of two-under-par 70 was good enough to give him a one-stroke lead after two rounds of the Senior Tour event at Charlotte, N.C.

Hill, at eight-under 136, will have plenty of challengers in today’s final 18 holes. George Archer (66), Dick Hendrickson (66) and Orville Moody (68) are one shot back. Bruce Crampton is at 139 and Chi Chi Rodriguez is in a group of three at 139.

Arnold Palmer, who trailed Hill by one stroke after an opening 67, shot a 73 and is at 140.

Sally Little, who has won once since 1982, shot a four-under-par 67 to take a two-stroke lead into the final round of the $750,000 LPGA McDonald’s Championship.

Little, a 21-year veteran with 15 tour victories, had a 54-hole total of 203. She had three birdies on the front nine and barely missed an eagle at the par-three 13th.

Beth Daniel, third on the tour money list this year, recovered from a slow start to shoot 67 for a 205 through three rounds. Another stroke back was Pat Bradley, leading money winner this year and the all-time leader.
