Bankruptcies Show Sharp Rise: The American Bankruptcy Institute reported that the number of bankruptcy filings jumped 26% during the first three months of 1991 as the economy sank deeper into recession. Individuals, businesses, farmers and municipal governments filed 230,723 petitions from January through March, up from 183,575 during the same period of 1990, the institute said. Consumers filed 224,399 of the cases, also a 26% increase. Businesses submitted 5,931 petitions, 14% more than they filed from January through March, 1990. Only farm filings fell, down 6% to 387.
