PLATFORM : Backed Into Corner
The danger is that these religious fundamentalists think they are practicing God’s will. They want to see women at home. They don’t mind if women work, but men have the last say. This patriarchal point of view of God’s will is not adequate for the modern world and will not last. Unfortunately, it stops love and goodwill and the creative solutions that we need for modern problems.
Feminist theologians still have faith that the more liberal institutions can rectify the political bludgeoning of fundamentalists. In the 19th Century, it was the big fight--whether or not women got any political rights and how religion stood in the way of the vote.
From the ‘60s on, the focus shifts from gender oppression, human sexual expression to violence against women. With the new Supreme Court ruling, you can’t even say the word abortion. A fundamental right is being censored, the right to know and control one’s body and choice of sexual preference. Human progess is being shoved back into a corner.
