City Councilman Michael Eggers, an aide to Rep. Ron Packard (R-Oceanside) and a 19-year resident of Dana Point, was elected mayor this week by his fellow council members.

Eggers, 43, became the city’s fourth mayor since its incorporation in January, 1989. He succeeds Bill Bamattre, a member of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Eggers takes over as mayor as the young city is about to approve its first General Plan--a blueprint for future commercial and residential development--and will soon study two proposed luxury resort developments.

“I must admit to some apprehension because I know the decisions we will make this year will impact the well-being of Dana Point for decades to come,” Eggers said. “That’s why it is important for each of us to look at not only the environmental impacts, but the economic consequences of our decisions.”

Eggers, who is Packard’s district chief of staff, admits to ambitions for a higher political office.

“I’ll be watching reapportionment very closely,” Eggers said, adding that he is interested in running for Congress or seeking a state Assembly seat.
