A 10-year-old Lakeside boy and his uncle were thrown from a roller coaster ride at the Del Mar Fair on Thursday, officials said.

Travis Neill and his uncle, Jeff Beaulieu, 31, were listed in good condition with multiple abrasions on their knees and legs, said spokesmen from Children’s Hospital and Sharp Memorial Hospital.

Travis and Beaulieu were in the last car of the Hi-Miler roller coaster ride about 12:30 p.m. when the accident occurred, Del Mar Fair spokeswoman Diane Scholfield said.

“It was coming to the end of the ride when a coupling device came apart, which released the end car from the rest of the train,” she said. “It stopped abruptly and its occupants fell to the track.”

Beaulieu told fair officials that he lowered himself to the ground--about an 8-foot drop--and then helped his nephew to the ground, Scholfield said.

“We are very, very relieved that that is the extent of their injuries. The ride has been shut down pending a thorough investigation by our ride safety inspector and . . . state officials,” Scholfield said.

She added that it is has been several years since patrons have been injured on a ride at the Del Mar Fair.
