Joey Gamache stopped Jerry N’Gobeni of South Africa in the 10th round to win the World Boxing Assn. junior lightweight championship at Lewiston, Me.
Gamache, 25, knocked N’Gobeni down with a left-right combination to the face in the ninth round, then followed with a flurry of punches in the 10th that drove the South African down for a second time. Vlademar Schmidt stopped the bout at 2:23 and Gamache was proclaimed the victor.
Gamache is 25-0 with 15 knockouts. N’Gobeni is 19-2 with 13 knockouts. The victory gives Gamache the WBA crown forfeited by Brian Mitchell when he elected to pursue an International Boxing Federation championship.
