From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A state prison board has denied parole for Joseph Remiro, a member of the Symbionese Liberation Army who is serving a life sentence for the 1973 murder of Oakland school Superintendent Marcus Foster. The three-member panel at Pelican Bay State Prison denied him parole consideration for two years on the grounds that Remiro committed a particularly cruel murder, multiple victims were attacked, he has committed other criminal offenses and has a history of violent behavior. Remiro, 44, and SLA companion Russell Little were convicted of murdering Foster and the attempted murder of Oakland’s associate superintendent, Robert Blackburn, on Nov. 6, 1973. Little’s convictions later were overturned on appeal, and he was acquitted in a second trial. The SLA became famous after kidnapping newspaper heiress Patty Hearst on Feb. 14, 1974.
