14,000 Gallons of Waste Spilled
Two sewage spills Sunday led to the release of almost 14,000 gallons of raw waste, most of it into San Diego Bay, authorities said.
Grease clogging city lines was blamed for the discharges, officials said.
The largest spill, which began at 11:30 a.m. and lasted for three hours, sent about 13,500 gallons of sewage coursing into the bay from a manhole on the 2300 block of Shelter Island Drive.
The other spill--from a manhole in the 200 block of Playa Del Norte in La Jolla--dumped 450 gallons of wastes into Windansea Park beach about 8:15 a.m.
Authorities posted signs warning bathers of the contamination.
