World IN BRIEF : PHILIPPINES : Mud, Boulders Bury Homes Near Volcano
A thundering wall of mud and boulders roared down a river near Mt. Pinatubo, burying homes as residents looked on helplessly. There were no reports of casualties, but Philippine authorities warned villagers living near the active volcano to expect worse flows of mud, including huge waves of volcanic ash and debris capable of entombing whole towns. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the Porac River in Pampanga had risen 3 feet because of rain and ash accumulations since Mt. Pinatubo began erupting on June 9.
