Sending Gangs the Wrong Message

Share

It is distressing to me that the Los Angeles Times and other news media exploit the activities of gangs in the L.A. and Ventura County areas. Of course, people--young middle-aged and old--like to see their names in print. It does something for the ego, and is looked on as an approval of what has been done, whether a worthwhile achievement or evil doing, and encouragement to “go and do more.”

I do not think our youth need to be encouraged in any way for the gang activities exploited in your newspaper, but that is exactly what your articles are doing. I am not alone in my feeling that the media is a key source of telling our young people that hurting and killing people is OK, “go ahead and have your fun.”
