DURBAN : What Next for ANC?

Share

The African National Congress opens the most important conference in its 79-year history in the South African seaport today.

Nelson Mandela, currently the ANC’s deputy president, is expected to become president, succeeding Oliver Tambo, who is retiring. But the crucial contests will be for deputy president and general secretary--either of whom could be 72-year-old Mandela’s heir apparent.

The ANC’s commitment to power-sharing negotiations will probably remain intact. But the organization is divided over pre-negotiation strategies and fearful of being outmaneuvered by President Frederik W. de Klerk.
