COUNTYWIDE : 1990 Crop Value Is Revised Downward

Share

Ventura County farmers harvested crops worth $853 million in 1990, $24 million less than earlier reported, Ventura County Agricultural Commissioner Earl McPhail said Tuesday.

The change was made after the discovery of a clerical error.

The revised figure still represents an increase of nearly 6% over the previous year’s record $806-million crop.

The 1990 crop report does not reflect an estimated $128 million in losses suffered by farmers in the December freeze. Those losses will be recorded in the 1991 crop report scheduled to be issued next spring. The value of crops is expected to plummet to as low as $700 million in the 1991 report, McPhail said.

The value of the county’s largest industry represents the value paid to farmers for goods.

The revision downward from $877 million became necessary after $24 million for the county’s lettuce crop was added twice to figures released in a preliminary report in April, McPhail said. The revised figure is included in the final copy of the 1990 annual crop report, available at the county agricultural commissioner’s office in Santa Paula.
