Warner Center Major Project Limits Sought

The Los Angeles City Council has directed its staff to prepare an amendment to the Warner Center interim control ordinance to place a heavy lid on major projects being built in the regional center.

The amendment, like the ordinance it would modify, was written by Councilwoman Joy Picus, who represents the area.

The ordinance is designed to remain in effect until the long-awaited Warner Center Specific Plan is adopted by the council. With the amendment, the size of new projects would be limited to 35% of the acreage on which they are to be located.

If the limit were to apply to all future development in Warner Center, development would be capped at about 15.8 million square feet. Currently, about 14.6 million is built. Recent citizen panels appointed by Picus have called for a limit of 26 million square feet.

The amendment has caused serious concerns among the major property owners in Warner Center.
